The game is played by a group of people around a circular table with chairs. Players must use a deck of cards and their own money to create the best possible hand. The game is most popular in the United States, but it is played in casinos all over the world. The earliest versions of the game date back to the 17th century.

One of the earliest forms of poker is called poque and it was probably played in the 17th century by French settlers in the New World. In this game, cards are drawn from a shuffled deck and players form their hands in order of distance from the dealer. In modern times, the game has undergone a number of modifications.

For example, the smallest card is no longer the ace. In some poker games, the ace is treated as the lowest card. In other games, the ace is the best possible hand at a given time. However, the lowest card may still be the ace.
